SWOGS - South West Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society
SWOGS is the South West Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society to which all permanent medical staff who work in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the South and West are invited to join. This encompasses hospitals as far wide as Chichester in the east, Truro in the west and Cheltenham in the north.
The Society holds an annual meeting (usually the first Friday in October) at a different venue each year.
All Doctors in training in the Severn, Peninsula and Wessex Postgraduate Medical Education are invited to attend the meeting as guests of the Society. Doctors in training from the three Postgraduate Medical Education Centres and medical students from Bristol, Peninsula and Southampton are invited to submit abstracts for consideration for both oral and poster presentations. These presentations take place during the morning and there is an annual SWOGS prize for the best Doctor in training oral presentation, the best medical student oral presentation and the best poster.
During the afternoon there are further presentations on a broad range of topics from experts in their field with the final presentation of the day given by an invited guest often on a non medical subject. In the evening a dinner is held and overnight accommodation can be arranged usually at the same venue.
The meeting is an ideal opportunity for Doctors in training to present their work in a friendly atmosphere away from their home Trust. It is also an opportunity for networking with Doctors in training from neighbouring Postgraduate Medical Education Centres and Consultants from the region in an informal setting.
Dr Lisa Verity, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro is the Honorary Secretary of SWOGS.
