The labour ward is an area within any hospital where at any time there may be women experiencing normal childbirth, not to mention fewer in number, fortunately, who may be suffering complications of pregnancy.
It is also an area where successful multidisciplinary working is vital for patient safety.
The Advanced Labour Ward Practice ATSM is designed to provide more in depth training in intra partum care.
This intensive 2 day course will provide theoretical and practical training in Management of the Labour ward which will enable participants to:

  • Update and advance knowledge regarding management of the labour ward
  • Hear presentations on neonatology, anaesthetics, obstetric medicine and complex obstetric interventions

This course meets the theoretical requirements of the RCOG ATSM in Advanced labour ward practice. However for completeness we recommend that some E-learning Topics be completed in addition to attendance on the course, there are excellent resources available in StratOG which can now be accessed free of charge via the RCOG website.

The module that you should read is "The Management of Labour and Delivery" which is one of the core training modules.

The whole module is of interest but of particular relevance to the ATSM and not specifically covered in the course are:

Tutorial: IUFD. Section: Consent for Post Mortem (including viewing the video)

Tutorial: Caesarean Section. Section: Patient preparation and classification of CS. To complement this tutorial you should read the RCOG Good Practice No.11, "Classification of urgency of Caesarean section-A continuum of risk"

Tutorial: Obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia

Tutorial: Perioperative trauma. Section: Third and Forth degree tears

Tutorial: Specific conditions-Pre eclampsia
